Diamond Market Report

Welcome back to the Diamonds Hatton Garden blog where we bring you the latest from our Hatton Garden jewellers. When looking for loose diamonds for diamond engagement rings, diamond tennis bracelets or a pair of beautiful diamond earrings it is important to understand how the global diamond market influences the retail price. We continue with our ongoing series, paused for a few months, and look into the latest developments within the diamond industry and share our insights. Our weekly report examines the global diamond market for both loose white diamonds and loose fancy coloured diamonds.

The fancy shaped diamond market continues to show strength in the demand for +1.20 ct sized diamonds and, in particular, colours F-J and clarity VS-SI. As reported elsewhere the Oval shape is now the most popular and in-demand currently followed by the Radiant, Emerald, Pear, Cushion and Marquise. As shown by our own client base, the market also shows that the demand for fancy-shape engagement rings continues to grow and that the demand for oversize or large diamonds for sale continues to grow.

United States dealers gro in confidence as orders start to pick up. There is a steady demand for 2.50- to 5-carat, G-I, VS-SI (3X, none) diamonds.

Across the pond in Europe, the Belgian market is open again after a summer break. Whilst there is a bit of a slower start, dealers expect this to increase quick;y through to mid-October in growth.

In the Middle-East, our sources report that whilst the domestic market is a bit quiet, there is strong export that is supporting the US market. The demand for better quality diamonds continues to be robust and there is solid interest in 1 ct., G-J, VS-SI goods for the strong US bridal segment.

On the subcontinent, there is a focus on large diamonds for sale with an increase in polished exports. There is a slight decrease in demand for rough cut diamonds

Finally, in Hong Kong the polished trade is improving ahead of an expected busy fourth-quarter shopping season. Dealers are seeing stronger orders from mainland China despite ongoing border restrictions. The demand for stable for 0.30 to 0.80 ct., D-I, VVS-SI2 and 1 to 1.50 ct., F-I, VS2-I1 diamonds, but below historic levels. The engagement ring segment is driving retail sales. Tourist traffic us still limited due to quarantine measures. Chinese retail slow but slightly better than a month ago.
