Diamond Market Report 21st August 2020

Welcome back to the Diamonds Hatton Garden blog where we bring you the latest in our diamond jewellery, diamond engagement rings in London and loose fancy coloured diamonds. As part of our new, ongoing series we share updates from the global diamond market and the latest trends.

As governments across the world begin to ease Covid-19 restrictions there has been a growth in the polished diamond market which has been seen most predominantly in the Chinese and US markets. In particular, sizes from 0.30 to 0.90 carats have been the most in demand and prices have remained stable. Cutting is expected to resume to a higher level as it has recently been slower due to the volume of polished diamonds on the market.

Fancy cut diamond shapes continue to be a popular choice with oval and pear shaped diamonds being the most popular in the categories of1.50 – 2 ct VS-SI and colours G-K. fancy cut diamonds continue to offer remarkable value to clients as buyers seek to maximise their purchase and move away from the round or brilliant cut.

As mentioned earlier, the US market has improved as jewellers continue to sit tight on existing stock and resist the temptation to buy. Fancy coloured yellow diamonds are becoming more popular in terms of both enquiries and sales. Potentially due to HNW clients looking to purchase a stone that has a good investment potential although this remains to be seen.

Belgium still remains slow due to both the time of year (August being a holiday period) and the after effects of the global pandemic. With increasing demand coming from the US and China dealers are returning from work however, both polished exports and rough imports are down dramatically compared to last year.

With an increase in demand from the US, both Israel and India see a steady increase in work. Large stones (3-5 ct) are experiencing an upturn and market prices remain firm.

Finally, Hong Kong ses a positive increase as the local government seeks to contain the effects of Coronavirus and orders increase from China. Dealers remain optimistic about a strong finish to the year and demand for stones of roughly the following characteristics is popular: 1-2ct, D-K, VS-SI.
