Welcome back to the Diamonds Hatton Garden blog where we share the latest developments and insights from our Hatton Garden jewellers. In today’s blog we look into one of our latest pink diamond commissions with the gorgeous and share how this spectacular piece was made..
At over 5 carats, our pink brownish fancy coloured diamond is incredibly special. Prized and desired for their rarity, pink diamonds are one of the most popular of all the loose fancy coloured diamonds with their remarkable hues captivating many. For such a special centrestone it was important to create the perfect mount that would accentuate the natural beauty and splendor of the diamond itself.
To begin, the consultation with the client to identify their interests, tastes and lifestyle to create a mount tailored just for them. During the appointment we discussed and shared concepts, looked at their existing pieces and worked closely to create a series of sketches and suggestions that would appeal to them.
Once the final design was established and agreed, the next step saw our in-house team of designers create complex CAD models of the finished piece. This phase involves taking the 2D sketch and creating a fully 3D model which is used for the master design and is 3D printed to create the moulds that are used in the casting process.
After the individual pieces are 3D printed and cast, our team of jewellers began the process of assembly before setting both the centre stone and applying the pave effect to the mount. Each element of the precious metal mount has been designed to showcase the diamond (such as the thinner band) and is hand assembled to ensure the highest quality and design. A pave/channel setting was created to both help create the illusion of larger center stone and draw the gaze towards the magnificent gem. In a pavé setting, small diamonds line the band and are held in place using small prongs. In a channel setting, a small channel is cut into the ring, with diamonds set in a row inside the channel.
After the mount is finished, the careful task of setting the centrestone began. Using a traditional technique known as tension our team skillfully worked on the ring. Dramatic and brilliant, tension settings use the pressure of the band to hold the diamond in place. The stone appears to be suspended between the two sides of the shank and almost floats. Because there’s minimal metal surrounding the diamond, this setting enhances light reflection. It’s perfect for a spectacular diamond.
Edging closer to the finished article, all that was left was to polish and clean the piece to ensure that it would delight and dazzle its new owner. Using an ultrasound cleaner which sends pulses of vibrations through a special solution the ring in all its glory was then ready for our client.
We would like to thank our client for their business and kind words and are delighted that they are happy with their new piece. Whether a diamond tennis bracelet, beautiful pair of diamond earrings or a special diamond engagement ring – our teams can help your diamond jewellery dreams come to life.
