For over 40 years our team of Hatton Garden jewellers have assisted clients across the world to find their perfect piece of diamond jewellery. From diamond engagement rings to diamond necklaces, yellow fancy coloured diamonds to pink fancy coloured diamonds – we take pride in helping our clients to realise their jewellery dreams. Based in Hatton Garden, the historic centre of jewellery and diamond trading in London, we greatly enjoy working in a location steeped in tradition and history. In today’s blog we delve into a short history of the area and share some insights into this famous part of town.
A Royal History
Hatton Garden has its roots deeply ingrained within royalty and is named after Sir Christopher Hatton, who in 1581 was gifted the property of Ely Place by Elizabeth I. Both a politician and advisor to the Queen, Sir Chistopher Hatton was a formidable presence and influence at court who received an eventual knighthood and was appointed as Lord Chancellor. Known for its beautiful garden which became synonymous with the area and its name, his name and reputation have lived on throughout the centuries as Hatton Garden.
As seen in many parts of London, Hatton Garden became the centre of London’s jewellery trade when many in the diamond industry began to work from the area. Specifically, the Hatton family began to sell parts of their estate to wealthy merchants and businesses who began to take residence in the area. London at this point was confined to the square mile City of London, and Hatton Garden became the reputable destination for trusted experts and quality craftsmanship.
As the centuries passed, the area’s reputation within jewellery grew as more and more businesses within the industry moved into the area. The ancient streets of the hallowed street still bear the hallmarks of its historical past and traditions that are kept alive by the bustling and busy workshops.
Hatton Garden Today
Unlike many of London’s historic districts that have been transformed into new developments, Hatton Garden has remained the centre of the UK jewellery industry. With over an estimated 70 dedicated jewellery shops and three-hundred jewellery businesses, it is still the largest jewellery quarter in the country, attracting visitors from near and far for the expert craftsmanship and detailed knowledge of all things jewellery. From diamond cutters to showrooms, jewellery workshops to the selling of precious metals – Hatton Garden is unique in regards to such a concentration of one industry in one location.
